How It Works

Traditional power

Electricity travels a long way before it reaches you, and every stage of that journey is on your bill.

Power is generated at a plant, stepped up through a switchyard, carried across transmission lines, stepped back down at a substation and distributed to your street. You pay for all of it, plus the energy lost along the way. None of it ever finishes: there is no final payment and nothing to own at the end — the bill simply continues at whatever next year’s rate turns out to be.

How It Works

Solar power

Your roof makes the power during the day. What you do not use is credited, and you draw it back at night.

The same electricity, made where it is used. Five steps instead of eight, and most of them happen without you thinking about them. Surplus production is exported and credited to your account, so the grid acts as a store rather than a supplier. You stop buying every kilowatt-hour at whatever the utility decides to charge, and start producing most of them at a cost fixed on the day you signed.

The Choice

Renting power, or owning it

Every month you pay a power bill you are renting electricity. The payments never stop and they never go down. Ownership has an end date.
